Hot Stone Massage in Portland
Hot stone massage uses smooth, heated stones to help relax muscle tissue, improve circulation, and reduce areas of tension. The warmth allows the body to relax more deeply, making it easier to address muscular tightness without relying on increased pressure.
Heat is one of the most effective tools for working with chronic muscle tension. It increases blood flow to the area, encourages the nervous system to downshift, and helps tissue that's been guarded for a long time begin to let go. In a massage context, that means less time coaxing resistant tissue and more time doing productive work, often with greater comfort for the client.
In my NE Portland practice, hot stones can be used in two ways: as a standalone treatment using stones throughout the session, or incorporated into massage to warm and prepare the tissue before hands-on work. This flexibility allows the session to be tailored based on your preference and what your body needs. Heat can be especially helpful in areas that feel chronically tight, guarded, or resistant, allowing treatment to be both effective and comfortable.
How is Hot Stone Massage Used?
Hot stones may be placed on specific areas of the body to allow heat to penetrate the tissue while other areas are being worked, or used as a direct massage tool by gliding along the muscle with the smooth surface of the stone. This combination of heat and movement can reach layers of tension that hands-on work alone sometimes takes longer to access.
They may be used to:
Reduce muscle stiffness and tension
Improve circulation
Help muscles relax without excessive pressure
Prepare the body for deeper or more focused work
Support overall relaxation during treatment
Hot stone massage works well for people who want the benefits of deeper work but prefer not to receive heavy pressure. The heat does much of the work that pressure would otherwise accomplish.
If I could give Steph a 10-star review I would! She is an exceptional therapeutic massage therapist and I highly recommend her to all my friends. Not only is she a skilled practitioner, but she is a great listener, and communicator. I feel heard when I am describing body issues I need help with, and she is always open to feedback.
— Emily M.What to Expect
The stones are heated to a safe, comfortable temperature and are always adjusted based on your sensitivity and preference. If at any point the heat feels too intense, the stones can be repositioned, cooled, or removed.
Your comfort is the priority. Sessions can be performed entirely with stones or combined with traditional massage techniques, depending on your goals.
If you've never had hot stone massage before, most people find the experience deeply relaxing as the warmth tends to quiet the nervous system in a way that makes the rest of the session feel more effective.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is hot stone massage safe for everyone?
Hot stone massage is safe for most people, but there are some situations where it may not be the right fit - including certain cardiovascular conditions, skin sensitivities, active inflammation, or pregnancy. If you have any health conditions you're unsure about, feel free to reach out before booking, and we can discuss whether it's appropriate for you.
How hot are the stones?
The stones are heated to a safe, therapeutic temperature, meaning they are warm enough to be effective, not so hot as to be uncomfortable. Everyone experiences heat differently, so the temperature is always adjusted based on your feedback. If the stones feel too warm at any point, they can be repositioned, cooled, or removed entirely.
Will I receive the same massage I normally would, or is it different?
Hot stones can be incorporated into a standard massage session to warm and prepare tissue, or the session can be built primarily around stone work. Either way, the session is tailored to your goals.
Do I need to have received hot stone massage before?
No experience necessary. Most people find it deeply relaxing, even on the first session. The warmth tends to quiet the nervous system fairly quickly, which often makes the rest of the session feel more productive. If you have questions about what to expect, you're welcome to ask before you come in.
Is hot stone massage the same as a deep tissue massage?
Not exactly. Although it can achieve similar results for some people. Heat does a lot of the work that pressure would otherwise accomplish, which makes hot stone a good option if you want the benefit of deeper work without heavy pressure. That said, stones can be combined with focused hands-on work when that's what a session calls for.
How long are sessions, and how do I book?
Sessions are available in 90 minutes or 2 hours. You can book directly online, or reach out first if you'd like to talk through whether hot stone is the right fit for you.
